Lloyd George Society

(formerly the Welsh Liberal weekend schools)

Final weekend school programme announced

4.33.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Wed 30th Jan 2008

Commodore Hotel

The programme for the weekend school at the Commodore Hotel, Llandrindod Wells from 15-17 February has now been finalised. Unfortunately some of the planned speakers found they were unable to make it after all and the identifying and confirming of replacements has only just been completed. It is exciting to note that David Butler, Emeritus Fellow of Nuffield College, Oxford and co-author of many of the British General Election series publications, will deliver his insight into the current political scene. We also welcome back Professor Kenneth O Morgan, distinguished Welsh historian and Labour peer with a contribution about Lloyd George's relations with our close European neighbours. We are also very lucky to have Professor David Reynolds of Exeter University , an independent adviser to the government on education, to speak to us about controversy over rural schools.

The agenda for the weekend is:

Friday 15 February:

8.00pm - Dinner and welcome from the President

Saturday 16 February:

Morning

9.30 - David Reynolds: The controversy over rural school

closures (topic subject to confirmation)

10.30 - Coffee

11.00 - Mick Bates AM: Severn Barrage and the Energy Crisis

12.00 - Professor David Butler: The Current Political Scene

Afternoon

1.00 - Lunch

3.45 - Tea

4.15 - John Campbell: Who Owns Britain?

5.15 - Lord Morgan: Lloyd George, the French and the Germans

8.00 - Dinner: Guest speaker, Stephen Williams MP (Bristol West)

Sunday 17 February:

Morning

9.45 - Annual General Meeting

10.15 - Coffee

11.00 - Lembit Opik MP, Lord Thomas of Gresford, Baroness Celia Thomas

The school will close at 1.00pm. A bar lunch will be available but this is in addition to the costs of the school. The hotel would be grateful if those wishing to stay for lunch would let them know by Saturday morning at the latest.

If you have not yet signed up for the school please contact Bill Barritt at The Leasowes, Wenlock Road, Tasley, Bridgnorth WV16 5LZ or through the contact link on the home page.
